Many people choose to have a home office because they want a separate area that they can be alone and think. Whether you’re a writer or a contractor that works from home, a home office is a dedicated room where you can work in relative peace and quiet. Because it’s meant to be a place where work can be accomplished, it’s important that the office is separated somewhat from the main activity of the house. Ideally, it will be upstairs or at least in some somewhat secluded area of the house.
It’s also important that the office has a door. It’s not that anyone is going to burst in on you while you’re working, but it’s an important mental block for you. It physically separates the room from everything else, and when that door is shut, you’ll be less likely to pop downstairs for a cup of coffee or to throw on a load of laundry. Another important step to establishing a successful home office is to decorate for success. Make sure you’ve got comfortable and user-friendly office furnishings, and make sure you’re stocked with all the necessary technology from a scanner and fax machine to a telephone and high speed internet connection.
